UConn Breaks Ground on New 2,600-Seat Arena
State-of-the-Art Facility to Enhance Athletic Department
Burton Family Football Complex to Undergo Expansion
The University of Connecticut Athletics Department has broken ground on a new 2,600-seat arena that will be the centerpiece of its athletic facilities. The arena will be located adjacent to the Burton Family Football Complex, which will also undergo an expansion as part of the project.
The new arena will house a variety of athletic programs, including basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics. It will also feature a state-of-the-art weight room, training facilities, and academic resource center. The expansion of the Burton Family Football Complex will include new coaches' offices, meeting rooms, and a team lounge.
The project is being funded by a $25 million gift from the Burton family, one of the largest gifts ever given to the UConn Division of Athletics. The new arena is expected to be completed by the 2024-25 academic year.
Saturday's ceremony kicked off the start of the building project. UConn President Susan Herbst, Athletic Director David Benedict, and members of the Burton family were all in attendance.
"This new arena will be a game-changer for our athletic department," Benedict said. "It will provide our student-athletes with the best possible facilities to train and compete, and it will also be a great venue for our fans to enjoy our games."
The new arena is part of a larger plan to enhance the UConn athletic department. In recent years, the university has invested in new facilities for baseball, softball, soccer, hockey, track and field, and swimming and diving.
The new arena is the latest example of UConn's commitment to providing its student-athletes with the best possible experience.
