Golda Meir: The First Female Prime Minister of Israel
Early Life and Career
Golda Meir was born Goldie Mabovitch in Kiev, Ukraine, on May 3, 1898. Her family emigrated to the United States when she was eight years old. In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she became active in the labor movement and joined the Socialist Party of America.
Political Leadership
In 1948, Meir helped found the State of Israel and served as its first Minister of Labor. She played a key role in the country's early economic and social development. In 1969, she became the fourth Prime Minister of Israel, a position she held until 1974.
Meir is remembered for her strong leadership during the Yom Kippur War in 1973. She also made significant contributions to the peace process with Egypt, culminating in the signing of the Camp David Accords in 1978.
Golda Meir died in Jerusalem on December 8, 1978. She remains an enduring symbol of female leadership and a pioneer in Israeli politics.
